FROM SYDNEY TO NYC, MAKEUP WITH TOBI HENNEY.
I bet you've scrolled through Tobi Henney's Instagram profile before and if you haven't i highly suggest you do. When Tobi isn't doing makeup on models and rubbing shoulders with celebrities she's attending beauty events and flying around the globe. This lady always had New York on her mind and she made it happen. The opportunities were endless after that.
TSB: HOW DID YOU FALL INTO THE WORLD OF MAKEUP?
TOBI: I was always interested in Beauty and the world of fashion and makeup as a teen. I did Drama at school and would always do everyone's makeup for the theatre shows. After high school I studied to be a teacher at University in Sydney and while I was studying, I ran my own Spray Tan business in a Hair Salon. That was where I got my first taste of building a clientele and working for myself at 17. After I graduated I lived in London and Europe for a few years before returning to Sydney. After I had settled back home, I decided that I wanted to get back into makeup and so I emailed as many makeup artists as I could to assist and enrolled in an 8 week, one night a week course with Susan at Makeup Mode. From there I worked super hard to assist artists and test shoot. It wasnt long before I left teaching to become a full time makeup artist and shortly after was signed to my first agency. It was the best life decision I have ever made to follow my dreams and do something that I absolutely love and am truly passionate about.
TSB: What does a usual day look like for you?
TOBI: The best part of my job is that no two days are ever the same and I get to travel all over the world for work. I am always working with different people and it makes my job interesting and keeps it exciting. A lot of the time I am in a hotel getting a celebrity client ready for a red carpet or press event. I am also often on set shooting in a studio or on location. Some days are spent travelling and others are spent on creating looks and editing videos for my You Tube channel. The variety is my favourite part!
TSB: How did moving to New York from Australia change your career?
TOBI: I never really told anyone I was moving to NYC. Purely because I wanted to see if I liked being here full time and if it was the right career move for me. I had been travelling to NYC for fashion weeks and always felt sad when I had to go back to Australia. A lot of my clients and friends had recently made the move and I knew it would kill me inside if I never gave it a go. To date, it has been the most challenging, fun, exciting and rewarding experience both personally and professionally. I am fortunate that I was signed by The Wall Group who manage me in the US and in Europe. I have had so many opportunities that I definitely would not have experienced if I had of stayed in Australia. Being so close to so many places is definitely a draw card. In March I traveled to Tulum three times to shoot swimwear campaigns and I recently got to do makeup for the Met Gala in NYC and experience The Cannes Film Festival and Dior Cruise Show in Paris.
TSB: What has been your pinch me moment so far?
TOBI: Working with DVF for Met Gala was a highlight. I got to do makeup for Talita Von Furstenberg who is Diane’s granddaughter and she is the absolute sweetest and wore one of the most incredible gowns I have ever seen!
TSB: What is your go to make up look for every day?
TOBI: I am definitely a ‘less is more’ kind of girl. This looks works well in NYC as I feel as though women here generally wear less makeup than in other cities. I spend most of my time on skin prep. I currently use Rationale products. Then I might use a CC cream - I love the one by It Cosmetics. I always fill in my brows and apply mascara. Then I throw on a lip balm, I am currently loving Dior Lip Glow.
TSB: What is your beauty advice?
TOBI: Look after your skin by wearing SPF everyday and a hat as much as possible. Skin damage is the main cause of aging! Drink lots of water and make sure you always use products to hydrate your skin and sleep with something nourishing on your skin every night. Sleep is also one of the best things for your skin. Try and get as many hours as you can a night.
TSB: What does your morning & evening skincare routine look like?
TOBI: In the mornings I shower and just rinse my face, then I use Rationale 1 and 2 serums, followed by their Daycream and Eye cream - both with SPF. In the evenings I cleanse with Rationale Cleanser and apply the Rationale Catalyst serum and DNA Night Cream and Eye cream all by Rationale. I use Skyn Iceland eye masks when I can. I love Weleda Skin Food in Winter when my skin is super dry.
TSB: What are some makeup products you cant live without?
TOBI: Eyebrow crayon. I love the one by Tom Ford in Espresso! Macsara - I am obsessed with Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir. Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow. I also love Stila liners as they do no move all day. Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks are my favourite.
TSB: Who’s on your list of people you’d love to work with?
TOBI: There are so many! Where do I start. I would love to work with Emily Ratajkowski, Bella Hadid, Romee Strijd, Rihanna, Taylor Hill to name a few.
