Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have no doubt heard about face rolling and the luxurious experience it brings, but other than being aesthetically pleasing, what do they actually do?

I asked skincare specialist Rachel Roberts, who explained that face rolling is the technique of rolling a tool created from an authentic jade stone over the face to promote lymphatic drainage, and improve blood circulation. This increase in circulation can help to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles and, with the promotion of lymphatic drainage, your skin will eliminate toxins which in turn reduces puffiness and inflammation within the skin. There is also evidence to support this ritual works to tighten and reduce pore size, and the appearance of dark under-eye circles. Additionally, it has been suggested that the rolling ritual can actually also aid skincare penetration, with the enhanced facial massage.

Many believe that the jade stone is the symbol of prosperity and tranquillity, making it the perfect stone to absorb any negative energy and release outwards. For best results, Rachel says to use after you have cleansed your skin (either morning or night), and have applied either a serum or moisturiser. “The slight slip on the skin makes it easier to roll. Always roll using outward and upward motions, doing about three up-and-out passes per area with a firm but gentle pressure. Starting at your chest, roll in an upwards motion to underneath your chin, then from the centre of your chin to your ear along your jaw bone. Work your way up the entire face starting from the centre, remembering to always roll up and outwards, this is key. The whole process should only take a few minutes, and can be repeated as many times as you like.” says Rachel.

“You will achieve optimum results if you use your roller daily, but I find rolling 3-4 times a week fits into most of my clients skin care routines perfectly, says Rachel.” She also advises popping the roller in the fridge between uses, to wake up puffy eyes first thing in the morning and of an evening, you can roll over my temples and just along more forehead and jaw to relieve any tension before bed. Further enhance this ritual to an experience by taking some long deep breaths as you roll over the skin, and begin to take your mind off day-to-day stress by focusing on the here and now.

As there are many different sizes and styles available, I suggest you use the larger rollers on the décolletage, forehead and cheeks, and the smaller styles for the harder-to-reach areas, such as around the eyes, nose and chin. To ensure the longevity of your jade face roller, it’s wise to clean your roller after each use by wiping gently with a damp cloth, and keep in a cool dry place. If you discover a squeak as you roll over the skin, just pop a drop of oil whether the stone meets the hinge, and that’ll do the trick.

For the price of lunch, why not pick up a jade roller and enjoy the multitude of benefits for yourself – and as the Instagram gals say …. #selfcare
