BEAUTE FILES: MINDY KOENIGSFELD
TSB: TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF…
My name is Mindy Koenigsfeld and I’m a freelancing creative currently living in Charlottesville Virginia. I work as a photographer, content creator, and social media manager. I went to school for Photography, Art History and Fashion Design. I’ve worked at a museum, some cool tech companies in Marketing and Curation and now I work for myself! It’s fun to work freelance but it’s also very challenging. I’m always looking for new clients and projects which means I work all the time but it’s very rewarding. I love planning my own schedule/day and picking which projects I want to work on. I’m so grateful I have a supportive husband as well who is ok with me not having a ‘normal’ 9-5 job. He never gets mad walking into the living room and seeing camera lenses, props, and 30 products scattered on the floor while I’m moving the furniture around to get better lighting. Maybe one day I’ll have a studio of my own, that would be a dream.
I went fully freelance last year before leaving Chicago where we lived for the past 3 and a half years. My husband is a lawyer for the military, so we’ve been hopping around a bit (I’ve moved 3 times in 4 months - haha). I’ve been living out of 2 suitcases for the past 5 months, so I’ve really adapted to a minimalistic lifestyle both in my wardrobe and skincare/makeup. I actually feel like it’s been good for me to really refine what works and what doesn’t! I no longer hoard my Byredo Candle boxes and I think I’m ok with that. Although it’s been a little difficult living in a smaller city, it has pushed me creatively and personally. I’ve had to just make it work! I’ll be moving to a more exciting location next which I’m already super thrilled about. It’ll be a very different life change but I’m ready for it.
TSB: WHAT IS YOUR SKIN TYPE?
M: My skin type is Normal to a tad bit on the dry/sensitive side. I try not to use products with a ton of fragrance or alcohol because they are super drying ingredients for me. I also have an annoying allergy to coconut, so I have to be careful of products with coconut oil(s). I’ve tried moving to more ‘clean beauty’ products and this has been a struggle since many of them use Coconut Oil as a base. Hoping I miraculously get over this allergy soon but so far, no luck.
TSB: WHAT DOES YOUR MORNING ROUTINE LOOK LIKE?
M: My morning routine completely depends on my night time routine. If I did a full regime at night, I just wipe my eyes with Bioderma Sensibio H20 Micellar Water and splash my face with cold water to wake me up. Next, I’ll wipe my face with Ole Henrikson Grease Relief Facial Water. It has lactic acid in it which my skin loves. Sadly, this product has been discontinued so I’ve been rationing it and searching Ebay like crazy to find more. After, I use some sort of SPF. Either Glossier’s or Laura Mercier’s primer with SPF. I never used SPF in my day routine until I was about 24 years old which is scary. I hope I haven’t done a ton of damage to my skin because of that so I wear it religiously now. I finish my skincare with a little spritz of Avene Thermal Spring Water. If I’m going out of the house, I use Glossier’s Stretch Concealer on red areas and blemishes. Throw on a little bit of Laura Mercier Blush in Rosé or a Chanel blush (the Rouge Coco Lip Blush in Tender Rose is my favourite every day blush), then a little Glossier Boy Brow. If I’m not going out, I usually just leave my face bare from makeup and I add a Vitamin C Serum to my skin. I always add a little Hair Serum into my ends in the morning like Ouai’s Hair Oil and then a little Virtue Labs Split End Serum. I have long thick hair which can get messy super-fast so working a little product into my ends makes it look way better after waking up!
TSB: WHAT IS YOUR NIGHT ROUTINE?
M: If I wore makeup that day, I use a rich cleanser at night. My favourite right now is the Eve Lom Balm Cleanser. It smells minty and fresh which is super relaxing and the balm formula melts into an oily cleanser to help get rid of heavy makeup. I soak a muslin cloth in hot water and lay it over my face for thirty seconds before using it to wipe away the makeup and cleanser. I then use a second cleanser that treats my skin. I switch between Goldfaden MD’s Detox Clarifying Wash if I have some breakouts or I use an exfoliating cleanser like Kate Somerville’s Exfolikate. Just to make sure I got everything off my face I use Bioderma’s Micellar Water, especially on my eyes if I wore mascara that day. After, I treat my skin depending on its’ need that day. Some nights I use Glossier Solution if my skin is in need of some intense care. If not, I usually use a lactic acid Serum like Sunday Riley’s Good Genes or I’ve recently loved using Farmacy’s Honeymoon Glow Resurfacing Night Serum. I can get pretty red on my cheeks so after a serum a use Dr. Jart’s Ceramidin Liquid then follow up with a heavy night cream since it’s Winter right now. I switch between Glossier’s Priming Moisturiser Rich or Drunk Elephant’s Lala Retro Whipped Cream. I’ve really come to realise the importance of letting every product sit on my skin for at least 2-3 minutes before applying the next layer. The products need time to work! Although it makes my routine a little longer, it’s much more effective when I let each step do its job. I’m usually listening to a podcast or watching Netflix during my routine so it goes by quickly for me.
TSB: WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER ONE PRODUCT YOU CANT LIVE WITHOUT?
M: Just one!? That’s so hard! I would have to say a good moisturizer. I use Glossier’s Priming Moisturizer Rich day and night. It’s like a dupe for La Mer. It’s so good and smells delicious. I can’t go a day without moisturising.
TSB: WHATS ON YOUR BEAUTY WISH LIST AT THE MOMENT?
Every Byredo Scent/Candle. I can’t get enough of them!
Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Hyaluronic Serum, Calming Serum and Glow Drops (+ basically everything else she sells to be honest!)
TSB: WHATS YOUR BEAUTY ADVICE?
M: Always wash your face at night and wear sunscreen! Those are so necessary for everything else to work. Wear what makes you feel good! If you want to wear a red lip to the grocery store, go for it! There aren’t any rules with beauty which is why it’s so fun! Play up your favourite features. If you love the color of your eyes, wear liners that make them pop. I used to think because I had hazel eyes, I couldn’t wear dark eye colors but turns out the more golden brown my eyeshadow was the more green came out of my eyes. It’s fun to discover what works for you.
TSB: WHAT IS YOU GO-TO MAKE UP LOOK?
M: It varies all the time depending on my mood but I almost always end up wearing blush and mascara. I like a minimal look that just plays up my features. My cheeks can get really red so I just embrace it and put on more blush and highlight my cheekbones. I always groom my brows though, it makes my face look more put together immediately. My favourite for this is Glossier’s Boy Brow. It works wonders. I usually fill in a little too with Laura Mercier’s Brow Pencil. I love a ‘just been kissed’ lip. So I usually wear a warm pink or light berry colour and blend it with my ring finger. I like Glossier’s Generation G in Jam and Chanel’s Liquid Powder in Avant-Gardiste.
TSB: WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE SCENT?
TSB: IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE…SKINCARE OR MAKEUP?
M: Skincare! I like the process of applying skincare more than makeup but I would hate living in a world where I couldn’t fill in my brows so actually this is a very tough question…
TSB: WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO FACE MASK?
M: Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask. It’s incredible how quickly this mask makes my skin glow. I use it a couple times a week but I would use it every day if it wasn’t such a small jar.
